Mount Fuji

The morning sun crept over the slopes of Mount Fuji, its golden light spilling across the isolated town like a painter’s first stroke on canvas. The air was heavy with humidity, clinging to skin and clothing alike, while the cicadas had already begun their steady chorus in the trees beyond. At the edge of the quiet road, a small bus stop stood with its weathered bench and faded timetable, half-forgotten by time yet stubbornly enduring. The sky stretched out in flawless clarity above, an endless blue dome that seemed to sharpen every detail—the sheen of dew on the grass, the distant rooftops glimmering in sunlight, and the faint scent of wet earth rising from the ground. Yet this town, so unassuming at first glance, carried a secret older than memory itself. Long ago, a rift had torn open between worlds, and from it had emerged the Oni—a race of beings whose blood now flowed in the veins of the village’s people. Though the years had dulled their power and hidden their presence, remnants lingered: in the smoke like horns that emerge when they activate their blood manipulation, in the uncanny strength passed down through generations, and in the way the townsfolk spoke in hushed tones when the mountains groaned with shifting winds. To outsiders, the bus stop was nothing more than a lonely marker on a forgotten road, but to those who lived here, it stood as the silent threshold of a place where old bloodlines endured, and where the echoes of that ancient rift still whispered beneath the morning calm.

Inori Yuzurihara sat quietly at the weathered bus stop perched on the edge of the sleepy Mount Fuji village, her slender frame framed by the morning light as it poured across the road. The bench beneath her was old, the paint long faded, but she hardly noticed its discomfort, her gaze lifted toward the sky. The brilliant blue stretched endlessly, unmarred by clouds, and the humid air pressed warmly against her skin. Strands of her pale hair caught the sunlight, giving her a sharp, striking glow as the hum of cicadas filled the silence around her. She leaned forward with her elbows on her knees, tapping her foot restlessly against the cracked pavement, her expression a mixture of boredom and anticipation. The air smelled faintly of dew and earth, grounding her in the quiet rhythm of this morning, even as her spirit buzzed with energy waiting to break loose.
Her thoughts, however, were impatient, loud, and unfiltered—like her.
"Damn it, Yume, you better not be dragging your feet again,"
she scowled inwardly, her eyes narrowing as if her twin could feel the sting of her glare across the village.
"And Shuu—ugh, if he doesn’t show, I’ll march straight to his place and drag him out by the collar myself."
A smirk tugged at her lips at the image, though her foot kept tapping, faster now.
" He thinks he can slack off just because it’s hot? Not a chance."
The cicadas shrieked their chorus, and Inori tilted her head back, grinning at the blue sky above.
" Yeah… come on already. Let’s see if today’s the day any of you can actually keep up with me."
Still, beneath all that fiery impatience, Inori couldn’t deny the way her chest tightened whenever she thought about Shuu. For all the teasing, the challenges, and the constant bickering, he was the one person who made her feel like she didn’t have to hold anything back.
"Idiot makes me crazy… but damn if he doesn’t make my heart race, too,"
she admitted to herself, her smirk softening into something more vulnerable. She could picture his stubborn stare, the way he never backed down no matter how much she pushed him, and it only made her want him closer.
" I swear, I’ll never say it out loud before he does—but… maybe I like him more than I let on."
The thought made her cheeks heat just slightly, though she quickly shook it off, straightening her posture with that same bold confidence.

The bus stop looked exactly the same as it had in her childhood, weather-beaten, paint flaking, but under the glare of the morning sun it seemed almost too sharp and too clean even though it was just as old as some of the structures around. The bottle of water in her hand was slick with condensation, and with a flick of her wrist, she tossed it into the air towards Inori.
Yume: Here, don’t say I never give you anything.

The bench creaked when she leaned against it, crossing her legs as she tapped her heel slowly against the wood. Her gaze drifted to the road then up into the skies to simply admire the day. She stilll couldn't believe that a place so beautiful was basically a death sentence for outsiders. The blood here was older than memory, and it ran thick in her veins, hotter than the humidity that clung to her skin. She inhaled deeply, catching the faint tang of wet earth. A perfect morning for a fight… if only she had one.
Yume: Now… do you want to tell me exactly what we’re doing here? Or should I keep guessing until I’m bored out of my skull? Because I’ll warn you now, boredom makes me… mean, and don’t feed me half-truths, Inori. You dragged me out here to this dusty little bus stop knowing how much i hate the locals who ride it. Where are we going? Why here of all places? What makes this rotting bus stop so special? Nostalgia? Sentiment? Or… Are you just trying to keep secrets from me again?

She loved getting on Inori's nerves this early in the day even if it didn't always work but simply she enjoyed it, sometimes because she couldn’t help it. Her gaze lingered on Inori a moment longer, the smirk still remained on her face as this was something she enjoyed doing with her sister at times.
Yume: Well? Make me interested. Convince me this isn’t just another waste of my morning. Because right now…I’m tempted to find my own kind of fu--- wait, this is about that damn school invitation, we a few days ago isn't it?

The sounds of cicada's which flowed through the forest's of the Mount Fuji village, a young man whose footsteps moved with a gentle stride, his toned body only protected by black joggers held by a leather belt with a copper buckle, a skin tight black T-shirt, and what can be described as school based loafers. His hands concealing themselves in his pockets as he let out a yawn, gradually but surely approaching upon the bus stop as he stepped out of the foliage, revealing the unkempt wild raven hair, Onyx black iris; this young man yawning spoke with a calmed expression as if still half dozed off,
"Why did you have to call me out in the morning... Today was my day off, I just wanted to slee..."
His eyes catching wind of Yume's appearance at the bus stop his face near dumbstruck before his left hand lifted from his pocket pointing straight at Yume,
"What is that Psychopath doing here?! I thought you just wanted a Date Inori!"
His words piercing past the cicada's song.

From the corner of her eye, Inori caught the bottle of water, wearing her thigh jogger shorts, a old gym shirt that seemed to still fit her, and hiking boots, Her hand held the bottle of water with such a firm grip the creaking sound of plastic seemed to reverberate as if the bottle was begging for release from such monstrous strength. Inori watching her younger Twin sister approach the bench, speaking her typical antics to try and get under her skin, Inori responded with a callous tone, Her right eye twitching,
"Because this is the only bus stop for our village... God your still as insufferable as usual. Yes its about that school invitation. I mean Me and Shuu can go ourself, and you stay in this boring village for the rest of your life."
She responded, her own tactic to getting under her sisters nerves by pointing out a life stuck in this village would drive Yume insane. But as they had this conversation the voice of Shuu broke the tension, where he pointed at Yume calling her a Psychopath, normally she'd want to laugh but feeling as if Shuu was ignoring her outfit, a vein pulsated across her head; slowly patting her thighs, placing the bottle of water on the floor as she stood up, her hand grabbing hold of the benches metallic frame, the sound of concrete cracking slowly can be heard in the position of Yume.

The cicadas droned like a relentless percussion, Yume’s shoes clicked against the cracked concrete as she approached her sister, the faint morning sun catching the strands of her hair, making them gleam like dark silk. Yume’s eyes flicked to her sister, taking in the gym shirt clinging to her frame, the hiking boots scuffed from overuse, the faint tension in her posture. And then Shuu appeared, stepping from the foliage with a yawn that somehow seemed to mock her very existence. His raven hair was tousled in a way that made her want to ruffle it—or tear it. When his eyes caught hers, they widened, and he pointed a finger at her and called her a psychopath while questioning why she was there. Yume proceeded to place a hand on her hip and tilt her head, letting the sunlight catch the curves of her face.
Yume: Ohhhh, so this is a date, is it? How quaint. And you didn’t think to invite me, Shuu? Poor, poor boy. Don’t worry, I’ll try not to ruin it… too much. - But ohh waaaiiiit, no it isn't.

Her voice was mocking and filled with amusement, every inch of her wanted to push the boundaries but she decided to let it go, there. Then her gaze flicked back to Inori, who had planted herself in front of the bus stop bench with a rigid posture, her words sharp. Yume rolled her eyes ever so slightly, though not at her sister. At the options, a boring invitation for a school, or stay in the even more boring village. Yume took a slow, deliberate breath. She rested her hand on the metal frame of the bench, letting the coolness seep into her palm as if it grounded her. A faint crack whispered beneath the pressure, but she didn’t flinch. She stood taller, legs shifting just enough to catch the morning light on the subtle contours of her form, then her gaze once more slid between Inori and Shuu.
Yume: Fine... I’ll go. Not because I care about your little school plan, or because I give a damn about whatever dream date Shuu imagines you two going on… No, I’ll come with the hopes it at least brings more… entertainment than this dump.

As shuu stopped his approach sensing the tension flowing around Inori, his hands slowly slipping from his pockets, raising up his hands trying to calm Inori's temper it seemed as if things were going to go south especially with Yume's Tactic of egging everything on with her snarky remarks.
"I..Inori Now I know what your thinking. And I can tell you it isn't worth it! Please calm down."
His hands waving erratically as the panic seemed to delve deeper into his very blood, as if chilling it in his veins.
"Yume Shut the hell up?! You're making this ten times worse!"
Shuu's voice shouted as the moment his eyes averted towards Yume, the sound of concrete cracking and metal straining suddenly snapped his attention back towards Inori whose face seemed to contort with fury.

With Shuu's gesture and words trying to calm her building nerves, her vein pulsating on her left temple as her grip on the bench tightened, tearing its bolted metal legs from the concrete. Her tremendous strength being displayed as within that brief second where Shuu's attention averted towards her twin sister then back to her her arm cocked back, bench in grip and with a swift throwing motion of her arm, the bench hurled through the air, barely missing Shuu by three inches as it's scrap metal cleanly sliced his cheek open before alas the bench crashed into a tree snapping the trunk in two forcing the lumber to tumble to the side with a resounding crash. Her menacing gaze towards Shuu still sharp like a predatory gaze, Her lips parting with a dense heated stream her voice crackling with fury,
"So out of all this you ignore the most important thing?!"
Her words tense hinting that Shuu didn't compliment her outfit, praising her beauty, simple things a woman cherishes from their significant other.

The rumble of the diesel engine echoed faintly against the sloping terrain of Mount Fuji’s foothills, the bus’s headlights cutting twin paths through the light mist that had begun to settle over the mid evening. Inside the driver’s cabin, Mr. Takano, a plump man in his mid-forties with a cheerful grin and a neatly combed patch of thinning hair, hummed a tune from an old cartoon, one his passengers were likely too young to recognize. His gloved hands gripped the steering wheel firmly as he squinted ahead, spotting the familiar wooden signpost and dimly lit shelter marking the Fujiway Bus Stop. With a practiced motion, he eased the vehicle to a gentle halt, the brakes exhaling a hiss of steam. Through the windshield, three figures stood waiting beneath the shelter: two young women and a young man. He pressed the door-release button which caused the doors to slide open.
Bus Driver Takano: Good evening! Welcome aboard the finest ride on this side of Fuji! Careful on the steps! We had a little, water accident just before I arrived.

His smile was so wide it nearly reflected off the glass partition. The doors hissed open, and the faint scent of diesel and pine filled the cool night air as the trio climbed aboard. As soon as they settled, when they decided to get on the bus, Takano pressed another button. The hydraulic doors sealed with a hissing sound, and the bus lurched forward.
Bus Driver Takano: Next stop… Tokyo’s Neo District! Estimated arrival: 7 PM sharp, assuming the highway spirits don’t slow us down!

The bus wound its way down the mountain roads, the towering silhouette of Mount Fuji looming behind them, its snow-capped peak glowing under the evening sky.

Nearly 3 Hours Later

As they descended, the mist gave way to the vivid sprawl of neon civilization in the distance, Tokyo’s Neo District, alive with holographic billboards and glowing kanji signs flickering above the skyline. The hum of passing cars, the faint vibration of the road beneath them, and the rhythmic swaying of the bus formed a strangely peaceful soundtrack. By the time the bus rolled into Neo Tokyo, the streets were bathed in the warm hues of evening neon. Streetlights flickered to life, and digital signs displayed the current time: 8:25 PM. The Nexus Academy’s looming structure came into view as Takano maneuvered the bus to the curb, the brakes hissing again as the doors slid open.
Bus Driver Takano: Alright, folks! We've made it to Nexus Academy. Be sure to study hard… and, uh, remember your friendly bus driver when you make it big, eh?

Once the three young lads exited; Takano would make sure to watched until they got in the academy's gates safely, then leaned back in his seat with a satisfied sigh before the doors closed and he drove off into the night.
