Fundamental Traits
- Comfort in Darkness: Not in an edgy way. He simply functions better at night. Insomnia isn't a problem. He just doesn't see the point in sleeping when the world is loud. Night is when he thinks clearly. He works better in low light. Bright spaces feel abrasive to him, like sensory overload he's learned to tolerate.
- Generative Quiet: Here's the thing people miss about Erebus: he's the father of Day and Light. Darkness isn't destructive. It's the condition from which things emerge. Erik creates. He builds. He nurtures, in his own reserved way. He's the guy who quietly fixes things, holds space for others, lets people grow without interference. He doesn't seek credit.
- Liminality: Erik exists between things. Between cultures (African American in Korea). Between worlds (veteran, no longer military but not quite civilian). Between life and death (combat does that). He belongs everywhere and nowhere. He's comfortable in thresholds: doorways, borders, dawn, dusk, the moments between states.
- Stillness: Erik is unnervingly calm. Not detached. He feels things deeply. But there's a patience to him that goes beyond military discipline. He can sit in silence for hours. He doesn't fidget. He doesn't fill quiet spaces with noise. In combat, this made him effective. In civilian life, it makes people uneasy.
How the Marine Corps Shaped Him
The Corps gave Erebus's nature structure. Without it, Erik might have been adrift: too old a soul, too heavy a presence, too comfortable in dark places. The military gave him:
- Discipline: A framework for his stillness
- Purpose: A channel for his protective instincts
- Brotherhood: The closest thing to the divine family he doesn't remember
- Trauma: Confirmation that the darkness is real
Social Dynamics
- Magnetic but Isolating: People are drawn to Erik but can't get close. He's the guy everyone trusts with their secrets but nobody really knows. He listens. He doesn't share. It's not intentional. He genuinely doesn't understand why people would want to know about him.

- Capacity for Coldness: Erebus is not evil, but he is void. When Erik cuts someone off, they're gone. No anger, no negotiation, no second chances. It's not cruelty. It's the primordial darkness simply swallowing them. They cease to exist in his world.
- Drawn to the Broken: Erebus is the space where things go. Erik gravitates toward damaged people. Not to fix them, but because he understands them. He feels most useful in the aftermath, when everything has fallen apart and someone needs to sit in the rubble with them.

- Darkness Manipulation: Once awakened Erik gains psionic power to control all forms and facets of darkness, shadow, and the absence of light. With this power he can control both Earthly and extraterrestrial darkness and shadow. He can generate, shape, and manipulate darkness at a molecular level, absorb and extinguish any light source to create absolute darkness, solidify darkness into tangible constructs, barriers, and weapons, travel through shadows and darkness across any distance, transform his body into living shadow, project darkness as concussive force, create fields of darkness that blind, disorient, and suppress all sensory input within them, animate shadows into semi-sentient extensions of his will, and perceive everything occurring within any darkness anywhere on the planet. He can create localized darkness in one area without disrupting existing light patterns anywhere else. He can channel ambient darkness through his body to generate shadow blasts, coalesce atmospheric darkness into solid form or toxic miasma, and summon darkness currents strong enough to support his weight to elevate himself (or others) to fly at high altitudes and speeds. He can also draw darkness from other dimensions or cosmic sources beyond the physical plane.
- Light and Darkness Immunity: Erik's body counteracts extremes of light and darkness, internally adjusting his photoreceptors, cellular structure, and metabolic processes in contrast to its external environment to an unknown degree. He can see perfectly in absolute darkness or blinding light, and is unaffected by any form of sensory deprivation or sensory overload related to light or its absence.
- Light Manipulation: As the father of Aether and Hemera, Erik can generate, shape, and control all forms of light across the full electromagnetic spectrum. He can produce blinding radiance, focused beams, soft illumination, or specific wavelengths at will. He can bend, refract, and redirect existing light, render himself or others invisible by bending light around them, project light as concussive force, solidify photons into tangible constructs and barriers, and manipulate ultraviolet, infrared, and other non-visible spectrums. He can purify and cleanse through concentrated radiance, accelerate or decelerate photosynthesis and biological processes dependent on light, communicate through light pulses across any distance, and perceive the full electromagnetic spectrum at all times. This ability is harder for Erik to access and control than his darkness manipulation. It requires greater concentration and effort, and at early stages of awakening it may manifest unpredictably or in response to situations where darkness alone is insufficient. He can shift between darkness and light manipulation, combining both to create contrast-based effects, twilight zones of partial illumination, or oscillating fields that disorient through rapid shifting between visibility and blindness.
- Shadow Travel: Erik can move instantaneously from one shadow to another, regardless of distance. He can step into any shadow or area of darkness and emerge from any other shadow or darkness anywhere on the planet. He can carry others with him through shadow travel. He can partially emerge from a shadow to observe or act before fully stepping through. He can use this ability to traverse dimensions and access spaces between worlds through the shadows that connect them.

Obsidian
Obsidian is a private military, police, and security firm founded in 2038 by retired MARSOC Brigadier General Erik Barion. Headquartered in the Hill Country of Texas, the company presents itself to the public as a highly secure corporate operation, a recruiting and processing hub staffed with enough armed personnel to maintain the appearance of a premium security firm. Behind that front, Obsidian operates a regiment-sized force of approximately 2,000 personnel organized into three functional divisions: Obsidian Security Solutions (70%), Obsidian Police Services (20%), and Obsidian Military Contracting (10%). The company serves foreign governments and local US government clients worldwide, taking contracts for training, static and roving security, convoy and VIP escorts, ship security, and actual patrols and military operations. Erik does not accept contracts from governments hostile to the United States, but beyond that single line, Obsidian works for anyone who can pay.
The company's true operational heart is a converted VLCC floating in international waters approximately 1,200 nautical miles south-southwest of Hawaii, beyond any nation's 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone. The vessel has no name and appears in no paperwork or communications. It functions as a full military base and training facility, with command and control on the bridge deck, barracks in the midships superstructure, training areas and armories in the converted cargo tanks, boat bays at the stern, a battalion aid station, and a flight deck on the roof. Between 600 and 800 personnel are on the base at any given time, with the remainder forward deployed on contracts or stationed at the Texas facility. The base is defended by two patrol boats, two helicopters, radar, sonar, small arms positions, crew-served weapons, and a Phalanx CIWS operated by former naval personnel. Everyone aboard wears sanitized uniforms and uses sanitized equipment: no name tags, no serial numbers, no rank insignia, no corporate logos, so that nothing on the vessel can be tied back to Obsidian.
Obsidian runs exactly like a Marine Corps regiment, with USMC ranks, a military chain of command, and corporate staff officers integrated as a command staff. Erik serves as commanding officer, wearing five-star rank when on duty and a suit when off. His division commanders hold four-star general rank and serve as functional unified commanders, while his elite unit commanders serve as geographic unified commanders aligned with the US Unified Combatant Commands. The corporate staff includes S1/Personnel, S2/Intelligence, S3/Operations, S4/Logistics, a Comptroller, a General Counsel, and a Public Affairs officer, all answering to Erik's second-in-command alongside the division heads. Discipline is handled through the UCMJ applied as internal company policy, meaning Obsidian cannot issue criminal penalties but can dock pay, suspend, demote, or terminate personnel. Every employee signs an NDA that itself prohibits acknowledging the NDA exists.
All personnel begin in the rigid Marine Corps format regardless of division. Security recruits train three days a week for one month; law enforcement recruits train three days a week for three months; military recruits train three days a week for three months, then rotate on duty for three months, then return for one month of additional training in a continuing cycle. The daily training schedule consists of PT and MCMAP, breakfast, four hours of hands-on training, lunch, four hours of classroom training, and dinner. The top 10% of performers across all divisions, measured by PT scores, combatives performance, marksmanship scores, and job-specific law scores, are offered positions in one of seven elite multipurpose units organized by geographic area of responsibility: INDOPAC, CENT, EUR, AFRIC, SOUTH, NORTH, and DIRECT. Each elite unit consists of two squads. These units wear the same uniforms as everyone else, with no visible distinction. Only elite personnel are trained for HALO insertion onto the VLCC from the company's C-5 Galaxy.
The company is equipped with Sig SAUER weapons across the board: the M18 pistol, M7 rifle, MPX submachine gun, M250 light machine gun, and MMG 338 medium machine gun, supplemented by Ontario Knife Co KaBar knives. Erik and his 24-person personal guard carry the Stealth Arms Platypus 1911. The motor pool includes HMMWVs, Jeeps, Ford SUVs and sedans, KLR motorcycles, police patrol boats, SOCOM rubber rivercraft, police and tactical helicopters, two Gulfstream G650s, and the owned C-5 Galaxy maintained by former USAF personnel. Rules of engagement vary by division: security may only meet force with equal force, law enforcement may escalate by one level, and military personnel may use whatever force is necessary to achieve victory against any threat proven hostile.
The CIA and NSA are aware that the VLCC exists but cannot prove anything concretely, and the US government maintains a wait-and-watch posture toward Erik and his company. Obsidian sustains its floating base through contracted supply chains, secures its communications through enhanced AI-controlled encryption using satellites and SCIFs for sensitive traffic and the internet for non-secure traffic, and moves its vessel to randomized locations for helicopter rendezvous while always remaining in international waters. The company motto, "Honor. Victory. Excellence.", reflects Erik's philosophy of running a private military force with the discipline, structure, and standards of the Marine Corps he spent his career serving in, adapted to a world where the line between sovereign military power and private enterprise has eroded.
