NEXUS BREAK - REINCARNATION SYSTEM

The Gods

The deities of Nexus Break originate from every mythology, religion, civilization, and cultural folklore throughout real-world history. Every god, demon, yokai, spirit, cryptid, and legendary being that humanity has ever believed in once truly existed before the birth of mankind. Their existence came to an end during the ancient tournament known as the Records of Ragnarok, where every divine and supernatural entity perished in mortal combat.

Although their physical forms were destroyed, their souls were not erased. Over countless millennia, these beings began reincarnating within carefully chosen humans across the world. These reincarnations are not descendants nor chosen champions-they are entirely new individuals carrying the dormant soul of a forgotten mythological figure.

A reincarnation does not inherit divine power from birth. Instead, the soul remains dormant until the individual reaches a state known as Self-Realization.

Self-Realization is achieved only through tremendous personal growth, unwavering conviction, and complete acceptance of one's own identity. It is not granted by the god itself, nor is it a blessing bestowed by another being. It is the result of the individual understanding who they truly are.

Only after reaching this state can a reincarnation awaken their true potential.

Physical Manifestation

Upon attaining Self-Realization, a reincarnated individual undergoes what is known as a Physical Manifestation.

This awakening causes the dormant soul of the ancient deity to resonate with its modern vessel, temporarily altering the user's physical appearance to resemble the mythological figure they embody. These changes vary depending upon the deity, often affecting the eyes, markings, aura, clothing, hair, or other physical characteristics while still preserving the player's original character design.

The manifestation also transforms the user's Qi, Spiritual Essence, and martial arts into expressions of the deity's legend rather than granting supernatural powers outright. Rather than learning magic, the user's martial arts begin reflecting the mythology of their reincarnated soul.

For example:
  • The reincarnation of Shiva may ignite the sweat upon their body into brilliant flames while unconsciously shifting toward an elegant, dance-like combat style mirroring the Cosmic Dancer.
  • The reincarnation of Son Wukong may display acrobatic staff techniques filled with trickery, feints, and overwhelming mobility that embody the Monkey King's unpredictable nature.
These awakenings are symbolic manifestations of the deity's legend rather than literal recreations of their historical feats.

Divine Armaments

Every reincarnation who achieves Physical Manifestation also awakens a Divine Armament. A Divine Armament is the legendary weapon most closely associated with the deity during mythology. Unlike ordinary weapons, Divine Armaments are manifestations of the user's awakened Qi and cannot be permanently lost or stolen. Each weapon possesses abilities inspired by mythology while remaining balanced within the world of Nexus Break.

Examples include:
  • Shiva - Trishula, the Divine Trident.
  • Son Wukong - Ruyi Jingu Bang, the legendary staff capable of extending and shrinking at the wielder's command.
Every Divine Armament should embody the mythological symbolism of its original owner without reproducing every legendary feat exactly.

Divine Armament Restrictions

To maintain fairness and competitive roleplay, certain mythological abilities are strictly prohibited.

The following abilities are not permitted:
  • World-ending or universe-ending attacks.
  • Instant-kill abilities.
  • Reality manipulation.
  • Omnipotence or omniscience.
  • Time manipulation on a universal scale.
  • Absolute immortality.
  • Conceptual erasure.
  • Weapons capable of automatically defeating opponents regardless of circumstance.
  • Mythological artifacts whose original lore would immediately invalidate combat (such as unrestricted versions of Pandora's Box).
Divine Armaments must remain balanced while faithfully representing the mythology they originate from.

Reincarnated Individuals (Playable Characters)

The primary playable characters of Nexus Break are known simply as Reincarnations. These individuals are modern humans carrying the dormant souls of the gods, demons, yokai, cryptids, and legendary beings that perished during the Records of Ragnarok. At the beginning of the story they possess:
  • No divine abilities.
  • No enhanced Qi.
  • No Divine Armament.
  • No Physical Manifestation.
Their only connection to their previous life is their personality. Every reincarnation naturally displays subtle behavioral traits reminiscent of their mythological counterpart without becoming identical copies.

Examples include:
  • A reincarnation of Shiva may unconsciously dance while thinking or fighting.
  • A reincarnation of Son Wukong enjoys practical jokes, playful banter, and challenging authority.
  • A reincarnation of Odin may constantly pursue knowledge regardless of personal risk.
  • A reincarnation of Anubis may possess an unusually calm respect toward death and the deceased.
These characteristics are intended as inspirations rather than complete personality templates. Players retain complete freedom to design their character's appearance, history, relationships, and identity. Physical appearance is never influenced by the reincarnated deity until Physical Manifestation occurs. Characters generally range from middle school students through college-age young adults, reflecting the era in which the story takes place.

Mythological Interpretation

The identity of every reincarnation is determined by how a civilization historically viewed that figure. Many legendary beings possess multiple cultural interpretations.

For example: Pazuzu is widely recognized within modern Western interpretations as a Prince of Hell, while certain historical traditions associated him with protection, fertility, harvest, and the northern winds. Within Nexus Break, both interpretations are valid parts of mythology. The Roleplayer and Staff should determine which interpretation best represents the reincarnated soul before play begins.

Possessed Persons

For players who do not wish to portray a Reincarnated Individual, the Possessed Person serves as an alternate character archetype.

Unlike Reincarnations, Possessed Persons are ordinary humans who possess no dormant connection to the souls of the ancient gods, demons, yokai, cryptids, or legendary beings that perished during the Records of Ragnarok. Instead, they become the living vessel of one of these surviving spiritual remnants after coming into contact with a lingering fragment of its existence through cursed relics, forgotten shrines, spiritual anomalies, forbidden rituals, or other supernatural phenomena determined through roleplay.

Rather than awakening through Self-Realization, a Possessed Person gains power through forced coexistence with the entity residing within them. This relationship can vary greatly depending on the character and the possessing spirit. Some vessels willingly embrace the entity in exchange for power, others struggle constantly against its influence, while a rare few exist in an uneasy partnership where both souls pursue a common objective.

As the possessing spirit grows stronger, the vessel's Qi becomes saturated with corrupted Yin energy, giving rise to a Corrupted Manifestation. Unlike the graceful evolution experienced by Reincarnations, this transformation is violent and unnatural, gradually reshaping the user's aura and physical appearance to resemble the possessing entity rather than enhancing their own identity. Horns, claws, monstrous eyes, spectral markings, distorted limbs, or other mythological traits may emerge depending on the nature of the spirit.

Possessed Persons do not awaken Divine Armaments. Instead, they manifest a Corrupted Armament- a weapon born from the possessing entity's hatred, obsession, or lingering will. These armaments are twisted reflections of legendary artifacts, embodying the darker aspects of their mythology while serving as extensions of the possessor's influence over the vessel.

Although Possessed Persons can wield immense power, that strength comes at a cost. Every use of corrupted Qi deepens the bond between host and spirit, increasing the risk of the possessing entity asserting greater control over the vessel's thoughts, emotions, and actions. Whether the vessel ultimately dominates the spirit, is consumed by it, or learns to coexist with it is a story left entirely to the Roleplayer.

The Possessed Person archetype exists as the thematic counterpart to the Reincarnated Individual. Where Reincarnations achieve power through understanding themselves, Possessed Persons gain strength by confronting, or surrendering to the will of another. Neither path is inherently stronger than the other, offering two distinct journeys through the world of Nexus Break.
